Washington State requires caregivers in ALFs and AFHs to complete approved specialty training before supporting clients with specialized needs. Those working with individuals living with mental illness or dementia must complete mental health specialty training or dementia specialty training to meet DSHS standards. (Click here to learn more about this WA regulation.)

We offer certification in the following specialty training programs:​

  • Mental Health (includes DSHS mental health specialty training options)

  • Dementia (includes DSHS dementia specialty training)

What is Mental Health Course

In Washington State, caregivers in assisted living facilities, adult family homes, or other long-term care settings are required to complete approved specialty training before supporting clients with specialized needs, including mental health and dementia.  The DSHS mental health  specialty training helps  caregivers build confidence, improve communication, and complete advanced skills needed for safe, person-centered care.  The DSHS dementia  specialty  training prepares caregivers to support clients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, covering safety, behavior support, communication  strategies, and specialized knowledge required by Washington State regulations. Both dementia specialty training and mental health specialty training are available online through virtual instructor-led classes , allowing caregivers to complete the program from home while  preparing  for their  proctored  final  exam.
